Hey | I’m Katie, a 23 year old NJ native, lover of my best friend Alex & a stay at home mom in the day and a working mom by night to our beautiful sassy little girl named Madeline.
This is my first time really blogging, and I am really hoping it is successful. I already know I am going to enjoy it. I want to blog to share our lives, share my thoughts, my passions, and the craziness.
The name “By The Water” came from the constant of water and what it symbolizes in our life. We live in a private lake community that I grew up on, but we are never far from a body of water; whether work, home, or vacation (what is a vacation?). We live by the water, make our home by the water, vaca by the water, find love by the water, dream by the water, think by the water, grow up by the water, eat by the water. I truly believe there is nothing that can fix a bad day, week, month faster than sitting your bum in the sand and watching the water, or walking along the surf, or watching the joy that eating fistfuls of sand brings to your child.
I would like to think my life is pretty and organized, terrific and exciting, scandalous and gossip worthy, but every parent of an under 1 year old knows that is the farthest thing from the truth. But I wouldn’t change our life By The Water for anything. This blog will have post about motherhood, having a home, relationships, recipes, anything and everything baby, DIY, family, current topics or trends, and more. Also a lot a lot of pictures of Madeline.
My Best Friend || Alex
Alex and I went to high school together at the local regional high school, so were from two different towns that are right next to each other. We were always friendly and in the same circles for most of school, but nothing ever happened in high school besides a brief hand holding at a Friday night football game. Years later I came home from college for winter break and we saw each other at a party, but nothing really came from it. Months later he randomly texted me, and thats where it all started. We talked all day and all night and he slowly became my rock. We ended up hanging out on a long weekend, I came home for and we’ve been pretty much inseparable since. Were going on almost 4 years now. Most of our relationship was long distance for more then the first half, but now we finally live together. He is my best friend, my answer to every question, my voice of reason. He is kind, so hardworking, a dreamer, a big mush, and our supporter. He knows everything about everything, you have a question he could probably answer it, and if he doesn’t know he will find out and let you know in minutes. Who doesn’t love having a walking encyclopedia/current event buff around? He makes me smarter and never makes me feel dumb, when I don’t get the question right on Jeopardy. He raises us up, and always helps us continue to grow.
Our Baby Girl || Born September 2014
In January 2013 we found out we were expecting a baby. Although it wasn’t planned our daughter is a dream come true and made us so much stronger as individuals and as a couple. I always knew she was a girl from the moment I found out I was pregnant. I did have an irrational fear that she would end up being a boy somehow, that every doctor and tech got it wrong. I probably had them check at every appointment. In September our whole lives got brighter and better. Madeline is our dream baby. She is such a happy and healthy baby and surprises us everyday. She is everything we dreamed about and is this perfect part in our lives & hearts we never knew we were missing. She has changed our lives & the lives of our families, and made us all come together. I always wanted to be a mother and its honestly the best thing I have ever and will ever do. Nothing makes me happier.
The Balancing Act
Everyday is a balancing act for us. Balancing being a stay at home mom during the day and working at night. Alex balancing a full time job, internship, and finishing his degree. Balancing being a couple and being new parents. Balancing families and friends. Its difficult and tiring, but we always make it work. We have an amazing support system between all of our family and friends who will help us whenever we need someone for just a half hour or even just to let me take a shower. I work at night or in the late afternoon, usually only missing Madeline sleeping or her night time routine. We are lucky we can almost always be there for Madeline, and are still able to take on everything else. I currently work in the social services field in a nonprofit organization thats focussed on helping children and families. It is very intense and emotional work, but I am so happy I get to work there and help these families, even if I do end up complaining. I also work in admitting for the ER at a local hospital. I went to the University of Massachusetts Amherst and graduated with a BA in Sociology and Criminal Justice, but worked in event planning and operations while there. I am still trying to figure out what I really want to focus on. But for right now these two jobs work perfectly with our family.
Some Facts About Me
I’m a type A personality, who sometimes can be quite a mess, especially when it comes to finding that other matching baby shoe (where do they all hide?).
I love photography, but I am a total beginner. I have a Nikon D3200 and an iPhone 6 Plus, and I think 99% of the pictures are Madeline. It’s a surprise to no one that she is my favorite subject. I love begin an amateur photographer with my camera, and try and bring it everywhere and dedicate more time to it. I also love professional photography. We have had the same photographer that was randomly recommended to us by a friend, for all of our big moments- gender reveal, maternity, and newborn. And can’t wait for her to do Madeline’s 1st year and all of our other special moments. I think pictures like memories are priceless and give you the chance to always remember that moment, that age, that event, those first foods or first steps. Photos allows you to look back at the moment and remember the emotions immediately and for a brief second you’re back. In my opinion there is very few things better then seeing and hearing someone exclaiming something like “Awww I remember that!” when looking at your photos. I can just already see telling Madeline about all the crazy photos I made her take.
I am a BIG book reader, and I get on these crazy fixes where I need to read everything about a topic, subject, or author. Currently I am on a big Historical Romance novel kick, its my guilty pleasure. So my Kindle app is always open.
I Amazon everything first before I buy it. Why go shopping with a 10 month old when you can get it at your door in 2 days.
I’m a gift card hoarder. I get a gift card as a present and I hoard it away (sometimes so well I lose them). I just always talk myself out of buying something or wanting to find the best possible thing to buy with my gift cards. But I’m only like this with gift cards, with money I can be impulsive.
I love cooking baby food. I love cooking regular food too, but baby food is so much more fun. And oddly relaxing. Im sure this blog will have tons of baby and toddler recipes.
I love sports, get way to involved in them, and have my own little opinions on random things about each sport. I love sports on my own, but I love more being able to share that passion and love for sports with my man and his friends. I would choose a Sunday spent watching football, with beer, wings, and the game over any day shopping.
My mom is my best friend, and no matter how much I try to avoid it, I am becoming just like her. I am officially my mother’s daughter, and I hope one day Madeline is just like me.
I love sweet tea, chicken parm, white wood work, blankets on my legs even when the AC is on, straight lines, crafts, elephants, other people’s tattoos, anything nautical, stained glass, dirty arnold palmers, watermelon, statement pieces, simple earrings, my pandora bracelet, wine, and wine again, seashells, themed parties, doing theme shoots with Madeline, the color white, black clothing, a good denim button down shirt, traditions, meeting people, and helping others. If I could come away from anything from this blog it would be helping someone, even with something as easy as a recipe.
I hope you enjoy!
