We haven’t been back in over 9 years. With the newest addition of Madeline to the family we decided to rent a big house in Dennis and go as a big family. It was such a perfect trip. On past vacations my father usually had some schedule or plans for each day or a few of the days. This time we all needed a relaxing vacation, so no big plans were made. None of us had a strict schedule or things we needed to get done. We also really wanted to have the time to go back and explore all the places we loved on past vacations. We were away for so long, but some of our favorite spots are exactly how we remembered them. I kept getting these moments where everything felt the same at years before, or wifs of the air that immediately brought me back to my childhood.
The house was perfect for everyone and would be the perfect house for even more people. I could just see a big group of my friends staying there for a week. It had a view that took your breath away. You could see the whole bay and the other side of the hook of Cape Cod. The back porch let you relax and enjoy the view the entire day. It had a winding private path down to Corporation Beach that gave you even more phenomenal views. It had everything we needed and more, plus a washer and dryer, which is an extra bonus when traveling with a little one.
We were able to really bond and enjoy each others company, which doesn’t always get to happen because of all of our busy schedules. Between both of our schedules we rarely get to spend time together, let alone alone time. Alex and I really were able to bond over Cape Cod, and showing him everything and watching Madeline enjoy her first vacation. Since we’ve been back we both just get these small feelings of “I wish we we’re back in Cape Cod”. The trip made me appreciate him so much more and realize all the small things he truly does for me and Madeline. Life has been really busy lately so it was nice for us to relax and spend so much time together and not have to set alarm clocks, or worry about when one of us has to go to work.
We all had visitors while we were on the Cape. My father and I both went to school in Massachusetts, so both of us had friends from college come visit. It is a much easier trip from Boston to the Cape verses to New Jersey. Some of my friends have never gotten the chance to meet Madeline so it was especially exciting for them to finally meet her. It was just good to see them, and made me realize how much I miss them, and how I need to make more of an effort to see them, now that were all a little more mobile. All of our lives are going in such different areas and directions its amazing to see, and makes me proud of all of us. It was nice they were able to meet Madeline, but also enjoy Cape Cod and relax.
This vacation made me realize how much Madeline has grown up recently. She is crawling everywhere, pulls up on everything, and finds anything and everything she can eventually play with or put in her mouth. She is trying to walk and loved walking along the surf and on the sand holding our hands. She ate like a pro and adapted to her new environment perfectly. Plus she was such a good girl in the car- sleeping through most of the ride, and only crying once each way when we were in slower traffic. It was so much fun watching her on the beach playing with the sand toys and water. We brought a cheap inflatable pool for her, because the ocean water can be very cold. We just blew it up and filled it with ocean water as soon as we got down to the beach. It warmed up so fast in the sun it was the perfect idea. Plus it allowed us all to relax and sit around her while she played safely in the water. She actually fell asleep on the beach before she could even play in the pool or ocean.
Even though we all wanted to stay another week or forever according to my mother we were allowed to go home once Madeline fell asleep on the beach with her. Just like when my brother and I were children. Which she did on our last day on the beach.
It was the perfect relaxing back to the Cape trip for us.
Has anyone else been to Cape Cod? What are your favorite spots to go?
Some favorite spots on the Cape-
The Sundae School– its an adorable ice cream place and a must go, especially with kids.
Kate’s Seafood and Ice Cream– a perfectly named restaurant 😉 makes some of the greatest seafood, and delicious ice cream. Plus they have beach tractor rides that take off from there, which is great for kids.
Sesuit Harbor Cafe– great raw bar and the biggest lobster rolls I found in Cape Cod.
The Squire– great historical bar in Chatham.
Dennis Public Market and the Surfside Grill– great place to get sandwiches for the beach or fresh deli ingredients for a dinner at home.
The Original Seafood Restaurant– what was once the original Kreme and Kone. It’s one of the best places to eat fish on Cape Cod.
In the Pink Store– in the heart of Chatham, it sells Lily Pulitzer and other adorable brands. I’m lucky The smallest size was 2T because I would of bought the store.
Nauset Beach– great bigger beach with big waves.
Barn and Co Store-Great place to get unique Cape Cod knick knacks and momentous. We bought new cats meows there.
